Former British health secretary Wes Streeting has described the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (EU) as a “catastrophic mistake” as he launched his bid to become the country’s next prime minister, according to a Euronews report by Nathan Rennolds.

Streeting, who stepped down from his Cabinet post earlier this month, has openly called for Prime Minister Keir Starmer to resign and told reporters that he would enter any leadership contest.
Speaking at the Labour Party’s Progress conference, Streeting criticized Brexit.
“At the core are three big, important choices we have to make as a country that can help us regain our sense of progress,” he said.
“First, leaving the EU was a catastrophic mistake. It has left us less wealthy, less powerful and less in control than at any point before the Industrial Revolution.”
Later in his speech, Streeting called for Britain to eventually rejoin the bloc.
“We need a new special relationship with the EU because Britain’s future lies with Europe — and one day, one day, back in the EU,” he said.
