Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said at a Cabinet meeting that the action is being taken because those states are refusing to provide information requested by the department, such as the names and immigration status of aid recipients.

She said the cooperation is necessary to root out fraud in the program. Democratic-led states have sued to block the requirement. About one in eight Americans use SNAP to help buy groceries.
