Almost a fifth of the food produced globally in 2022 was wasted, despite around a third of humanity facing hunger, according to a recent report by a UN body, as reported by Kyodo News.

The volume of food waste worsened from 931 million tons of waste in 2019.
Of the 1.05 billion tons of food waste, around 60% came from households, while the food service and retail sectors accounted for about 28% and 12%, respectively, according to the UN Environment Program's Food Waste Index Report.
The report, released in late March, comes as the UN body tracks countries' progress in halving food waste by 2030 under the Sustainable Development Goals.
The volume worsened from 931 million tons of waste in 2019, as per the report published in 2021.
Japan saw a 31% reduction in food waste in 2020 compared to 2008, according to the report. Japan is among only four countries in the Group of 20 (G20) major economies and the European Union (EU) with waste estimates suitable for tracking progress toward the target year, as reported by Mainichi Japan.
