April 30 Deadline For PUV Franchise Consolidation Firm, Says PBBM

Updated: Apr 12

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has asserted that the April 30 deadline for the consolidation of public utility vehicle (PUV) franchises will not be extended further, according to a statement during Town Hall Meeting on Traffic Concerns.

President Marcos assured that operators and drivers wouldn't bear undue burdens in acquiring modern jeepney units, ensuring an organized system.

Originally set for December 31, 2023, the deadline was moved to April 30, 2024, based on the Department of Transportation's recommendation.

Franchise consolidation is a crucial aspect of the government's PUV modernization program, necessitating operators to form cooperatives or corporations to access financing for modern jeepney units.

Failure to meet this deadline may result in the cancellation or revocation of franchises, prohibiting non-compliant units from plying any route.

President Marcos assured that operators and drivers wouldn't bear undue burdens in acquiring modern jeepney units, ensuring an organized system. The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) expressed confidence in managing any resulting transport gaps, citing consolidated entities on major thoroughfares.
