2026 World Cup Redefines the Economics of Global Sports

There are few remaining events that capture the attention of audiences around the world simultaneously. Unlike on-demand programming, live sporting events cannot be paused, skipped, or meaningfully watched after the outcome is known without losing much of their appeal.

That scarcity has made broadcast rights among the most valuable assets in the media industry.

For years, major American sports leagues—with long seasons and hundreds of games—were considered the benchmark for sports media revenue.

Conventional wisdom held that a month-long international tournament held every four years could not generate comparable financial returns.

According to the report, that assumption changed following the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final on July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, where Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time on a goal by Ferran Torres.

The larger financial victory, however, belonged to FIFA.

According to CNBC, citing FIFA's own estimates, the organization is expected to generate more than $9 billion in revenue from the 2026 World Cup, making it the most lucrative sporting event in history.

Much of that growth stems from the tournament's expansion from 32 to 48 teams, increasing the number of matches from 64 to 104 and extending the competition from four weeks to six weeks.

FIFA also plans to distribute $2.7 billion to its 211 member associations between 2027 and 2030, according to CNBC.
