57 U.S. Lawmakers Demand Quiz Into Shireen Abu Akleh Murder By Israeli Troops

A quarter of all House Democrats signed a letter to US Secretary of State Blinken and FBI director Christopher Wray demanding an independent investigation into the recent killing of the Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank city of Jenin, Ben Samuels reported for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.

The demand came after the Israeli military wrongly claimed that Palestinian gunmen fired the shit that killed the famous Al Jazeera female journalist, with an Israeli human rights group admitting that its own investigation showed the nearest Palestinian militant was 300 meters away, blocked by a warren of shops and crowded streets.

The finding was never controverted by the Israeli defense ministry.

In a letter to Blinken and Wray, the lawmakers — one-fourth of all House Democrats led by Reps. Andre Carson, Lou Correa, and Bill Pascrell — noted they were "deeply concerned" by her death, highlighting the conflicting reports from the Israeli military and international media and eyewitnesses to the Al Jazeera journalist's killing.

The Israeli police also refused to undertake an inquiry despite the clear evidence that only Israeli troops were armed with M-16 automatic rifles. The Israelis also suppressed the funeral march for Akleh, who was also a US citizen and arrested the pallbearers.
