Blockchain analytics firm TRM Labs reported that approximately $6.36 billion was stolen from Binance.
The firm attributed the incident with high confidence to North Korea-linked cybercriminals associated with the TraderTraitor operation.
The incident underscores the growing risks facing cryptocurrency exchanges and other digital-asset platforms as criminal groups develop more sophisticated methods to compromise systems and move stolen funds.
TRM Labs also reported 207 cryptocurrency hacks during the first half of 2026, resulting in approximately $972 million in losses.
Although the number of incidents reached a record, the total value stolen was less than half the approximately $2.3 billion reported during the same period in 2025.
Researchers have also warned that advances in quantum computing could eventually threaten some of the cryptographic systems used to secure digital assets.
However, the prospect of quantum computers breaking widely used cryptocurrency encryption remains a future risk rather than an established capability.
A theoretical study estimating the resources needed to compromise Bitcoin's elliptic-curve cryptography does not demonstrate that such a machine currently exists.
The growing number of cyberattacks highlights the need for stronger exchange security, improved transaction monitoring and more effective protection of digital-asset infrastructure.
