A former architect, Rex Heuermann, has admitted to killing eight women and dumping their bodies on Long Island’s Gilgo Beach, more than a decade after the grisly discoveries shocked the region and captivated the nation, as reported by Matt Lavietes for NBC News.

Heuermann, 62, changed his plea during a court appearance in Suffolk County, pleading guilty to seven counts and admitting responsibility for the death of Karen Vergata.
As part of the plea agreement, he will not face a separate charge for her murder, which had not previously been formally filed.
In court, Heuermann admitted to meeting all eight victims, strangling them, and disposing of their remains in areas including Gilgo Beach, Manorville, and Southampton.
He is expected to receive life imprisonment without parole, with multiple consecutive sentences. Sentencing is scheduled for June 17.
It remains unclear why Heuermann chose to change his plea after maintaining his innocence since his 2023 arrest. His former wife, Asa Ellerup, and their daughter were present during the hearing, which took place just months before his trial was set to begin.
