Earlier, he lifted restrictions on sales of Nvidia’s China-specific H20 AI chips, which have less processing capacity than the H200, but China halted imports of the reduced units, Daniel Howley reported for Yahoo Business on Dec. 9, 2025.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Chinese President Xi Jinping responded “positively” to the move.

Trump also said Nvidia would pay the US government 25 percent of revenue from chip sales to China, up from an initial 15 percent.

Nvidia shares, which had already risen on reports of the move, continued climbing in after-hours trading, gaining more than 2 percent.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, along with other proponents of selling chips to China, has argued that allowing sales of high-powered chips gives the US an advantage in the AI race by ensuring Chinese developers remain dependent on US-built technologies.

Without access to Nvidia’s chips, Chinese tech companies have accelerated development of their own AI processors and software.

Huang has said it is imperative for the US to maintain a presence in the Chinese AI market, which is home to roughly half of the world’s AI programmers.
