After Saying Jews Are Anti-Semitic, Russia Hits Israel's Backing Of Ukraine
Russia's foreign ministry accused Israel on Tuesday of supporting neo-Nazis in Ukraine, further escalating a row that began when Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed Adolf Hitler had Jewish origins, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

Israel lambasted Lavrov on Monday, saying his claim – made when talking about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy who is Jewish – was an "unforgivable" falsehood that debased the horrors of the Nazi Holocaust.
Leaders from several Western nations denounced Lavrov's comments and Zelenskyy accused Russia of having forgotten the lessons of World War II. Russia said Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid's comments were "anti-historical" and "explaining to a large extent why the current Israeli government supports the neo-Nazi regime in Kyiv."
Moscow reiterated Lavrov's point that Zelenskyy's Jewish origins did not preclude Ukraine from being run by neo-Nazis. "Antisemitism in everyday life and in politics is not stopped and is on the contrary nurtured (in Ukraine)," it said in a statement.
Israel's Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz reacted to the Russian foreign ministry's statement shortly after, saying "there is no neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine. Zelenskyy is not a Nazi."
Lavrov earlier hinted that Hitler had Jewish blood, which is false since it was based on World War II propaganda that insinuated Hitler’s grandmother, Maria Anna Schicklgruber, was Jewish.
Schicklgruber actually means “posh valley” in Austria. Hitler’s father, Alois Schicklgruber, was born out of wedlock but his father, Johann Georg Heidler, eventually married Maria. Alois took Heidler as his surname in 1877, a dozen years before Adolf was born, and changed it to Hitler. Heidler means “hut” in German.
Reporting for The Independent on May 3, Alisha Rahaman Sarkar said Israel has demanded an apology after Lavrov claimed that German dictator Adolf Hitler had Jewish blood in an effort to justify Moscow’s call to “denazify” Ukraine.
Lavrov had argued that Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky’s Jewish ancestry did not matter.
“So what if Zelensky is Jewish? The fact does not negate the Nazi elements in Ukraine. I believe that Hitler also had Jewish blood,” the Russian minister said, referring to an unverified claim that Hitler, responsible for the death of nearly 6 million Jews, had possible Jewish and African ancestors.
“Some of the worst antisemites are Jews,” he added in an interview with an Italian television show on Sunday. Fully 11 percent of people surnamed Schicklgruber reside in Russia.
