Amazon will invest $4 billion in Anthropic, doubling its commitment to the AI startup since last year, Fortune’s Data Sheet reported.

Despite the investment, Amazon will remain a minority stakeholder in Anthropic. In return, the San Francisco-based startup will make Amazon Web Services (AWS) its “primary training partner” and use Amazon’s Tranium chips, developed by Annapurna Labs, to train and operate its models.

Anthropic, founded in 2021 by siblings Dario and Daniela Amodei—former executives at OpenAI—alongside five colleagues, has quickly become a leader in AI innovation.

A September 2024 report estimated Anthropic’s valuation at $40 billion.

The expanding partnerships between Big Tech companies and emerging AI startups, like that of Amazon and Anthropic, have drawn attention from regulators. However, UK authorities determined in September that their financial relationship did not meet the threshold for a formal investigation.
