Apple's AI Strategy Draws Comparisons to Rockefeller's Standard Oil Playbook

Apple's decision to avoid the artificial intelligence spending race has drawn comparisons to John D. Rockefeller's strategy at Standard Oil.

The approach has helped support the company's stock, which reached another record high of $333.26, despite being viewed by some on Wall Street as the "anti-AI" trade because of its relatively restrained investment in AI infrastructure, Kit Norton reported for Barron's Daily.

Unlike fellow Magnificent Seven companies—including Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta Platforms—which are spending hundreds of billions of dollars expanding AI capabilities, Apple has taken a different approach.

Rockefeller famously left the risky business of oil exploration to independent producers while focusing on refining and distribution. Similarly, Apple's peers are investing heavily in AI research and infrastructure, while Apple is positioning itself to adopt leading AI models once they mature.

The company is also pursuing acquisitions, reportedly seeking firms capable of developing AI server chips, according to The Information.

Just as Rockefeller dominated oil by controlling distribution, Apple today maintains one of the world's strongest consumer hardware ecosystems through its leadership in smartphones and other connected devices where AI applications are increasingly being deployed.
