The Biden administration has made a turnaround by saying it would support lifting patent protections for COVID vaccines, a breakthrough for efforts to produce more doses globally, Remy Tumin and Jade Snow-Joachim said in a New York Times.

Earlier, the US had opposed a proposal at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to suspend intellectual property protections in an effort to ramp up vaccine production.
However, President Biden came under extreme pressure to throw his support behind the proposal as the pandemic rages in India and South America.
In poorer nations, vaccinations are happening far too slowly. Despite early vows, the developed world has done little to promote global vaccination, in what analysts call both a moral and epidemiological failure, the New York Times reported.
