Despite acknowledging progress made at COP28 in addressing climate change amid geopolitical tensions, Gates believes achieving the 2°C target is unlikely, as reported by Sharon Chen and Francine Lacqua for Bloomberg.
Gates stated in a Bloomberg TV interview at the annual United Nations meeting in Dubai, "Climate progress is moving ahead even though we won't meet our highest aspirations."
He emphasized that keeping warming below 3°C could still mitigate many of the severe consequences associated with climate change, provided responsible actions are taken.
A 2018 study in Lancet Planetary Health indicated that a 3°C increase from pre-industrial levels could expose up to 50 million people to temperatures beyond human survivability.
Gates highlighted the importance of staying below the higher temperature range to avoid significant adverse effects.
