The political party of Brazilian Senator Flávio Bolsonaro has acknowledged the result of the country’s presidential runoff, even as the defeated candidate has pledged to seek the annulment of the election.

On Monday, Valdemar Costa Neto, leader of the right-wing Liberal Party, issued a statement recognizing the result while calling for questions surrounding the vote to be clarified, according to Al Jazeera and Reuters reports.

“We recognize the presidential election results,” Costa Neto said. “But we believe the issues raised need to be properly clarified.”

On Sunday, incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated Flávio Bolsonaro by more than four million votes, securing another presidential term.

Bolsonaro has not conceded defeat and has said he intends to challenge the result through legal channels.

In his post-election remarks, Bolsonaro described the outcome as unacceptable and questioned a last-minute decision to extend voting hours.

He argued that the extension raised concerns about the fairness of the election.

US President Donald Trump also questioned the result, saying the election appeared to have been rigged. However, Reuters reported that Trump did not provide evidence to support the allegation.

Bolsonaro said he would pursue legal action and request that the election be annulled.

The dispute centers in part on a decision to extend voting hours by two hours on Sunday. The extension had been requested by both presidential campaigns, although for different reasons.

Bolsonaro’s campaign cited severe weather that could prevent some voters from reaching polling stations.

Parts of southern Brazil, a region generally associated with stronger right-wing support, experienced heavy rain on election day.

The fact that both campaigns sought an extension is relevant to evaluating Bolsonaro’s subsequent objections. The existence of a voting extension, by itself, does not establish that the election result was invalid.

The Liberal Party’s statement accepting the result while calling for clarification also marks a distinction between the party’s position and Bolsonaro’s continuing effort to challenge the outcome.
