Canada's Maple Syrup Reserve Hits 16-Year Low

Canada's maple syrup reserve, the world's only one of its kind, has reached a 16-year low, sparking concerns about the future of this globally-loved sweet staple in the face of climate change, as reported by Nadine Yousif for BBC News.

The reserve is designed to hold 133 million pounds of maple syrup annually, but the supply dwindled to 6.9 million pounds (3.1 million kg).

The reserve, situated in Quebec, is designed to hold 133 million pounds of maple syrup annually.

However, in 2023, the supply dwindled to 6.9 million pounds (3.1 million kg). Experts attribute the shortage to both increased demand and warmer weather, which has disrupted production.

Canada's billion-dollar maple syrup industry represents 75% of the world's total maple syrup production, with Quebec contributing 90% of the overall supply.

However, experts reassure that this decline will not immediately affect the availability or pricing of maple syrup for consumers.

Simon Doré-Ouellet, the deputy director-general of the Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, stated, "The strategic reserve is at its lowest level since 2008, but we do not anticipate any supply issues in the near future."
