Carney's Liberals Sweep Three Canada By-Elections as Trade Tensions With U.S. Rise

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's Liberal Party swept three federal by-elections on Monday, strengthening the government's parliamentary position as tensions with the United States continue to escalate.

The Liberals won all three contested seats: Chicoutimi—Le Fjord in Quebec, Beaches—East York in Toronto and North Vancouver—Capilano in British Columbia. The victory in Chicoutimi—Le Fjord was particularly significant because the Quebec riding had been held by the Conservatives since 2018. 

The three victories increase the Liberals' majority in the 343-seat House of Commons to 173 seats. 

Carney congratulated the winning candidates and said Canadians had placed their trust in his government at a consequential time for the country.

The results came amid a worsening trade dispute with Washington. The United States has imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports, while Canada has announced retaliatory measures.

The latest escalation followed the collapse of US-Canada trade negotiations. 

The dispute has become particularly sensitive in Quebec, where concerns about Canada's sovereignty and French-language culture have intensified amid Trump's repeated comments about Canada becoming the 51st US state.

Carney has sought to strengthen Canada's economic relationships with other countries while maintaining a firm negotiating position toward Washington.

His approach has received substantial public support: a recent poll found that 76% of Canadians approved of his handling of relations with the United States.

The by-election results give Carney additional political room to maneuver as his government confronts the economic and diplomatic consequences of the trade dispute.
