Trump said there was nothing Carney could say to convince him to lift U.S. levies on Canadian goods. “It’s just the way it is,” Trump said, Barron’s Daily reported.
Earlier in the day, Trump posted on Truth Social that the U.S. doesn’t need Canada’s energy or lumber, declaring: “We don’t need ANYTHING they have,” while Canada needs “EVERYTHING from us!”
He also told Carney, “We want to make our own cars.” Carney was elected prime minister on a “Canada Strong” platform, in part as a response to Trump’s rhetoric. When Trump said Canada should become part of the U.S., Carney firmly replied that Canada would never be for sale.
Trump retorted: “Never say never.”
