It’s getting harder to find new sedans in America.

The Chevrolet Malibu, Subaru Legacy, and Volvo S90 are among the models that won’t return for 2026, part of a wave of cuts as automakers shift portfolios toward SUVs and electric vehicles, Bailey Schulz reported for USA Today.

Car sales accounted for just 19% of the US market between January and October 2024, compared with SUVs at 58%, according to car-shopping site Edmunds.

“The downfall of sedans continues” even though they are often more affordable than larger vehicles, said Justin Fischer, media specialist at online marketplace CarEdge.

“We’re seeing lots of affordable sedans going away, so we expect the average selling price of new cars in America to increase in 2026 because of that alone.”

Audi is dropping the A4, replacing it with the A5 Sportback as part of a naming overhaul that assigns odd numbers to combustion-engine models and even numbers to electric vehicles, spokesperson Mark Dahncke said.

Cadillac will end production of the XT6, a three-row SUV, later in 2025 and replace it with the all-electric Vistiq, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Other models being discontinued include BMW’s 5 Series design variant, the Chevrolet Malibu, Infiniti’s QX50 compact luxury SUV and QX55 crossover coupe, and Lexus’ LC Hybrid Coupe, RC, and RC F.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB, an all-electric compact SUV, will also be withdrawn from the US and Canadian markets after model year 2025. Porsche’s 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman will cease production this year as well.
