“If we fight, we will fight to the end; if we talk, the door is open,” China’s Ministry of Commerce said.
“The tariff war and trade war were unilaterally initiated by the U.S. If the U.S. wants to talk, it should show sincerity, correct its wrongful practices, and cancel the unilateral tariffs.”
China has reportedly drafted a list of U.S. goods exempt from its 125% tariffs in an effort to ease trade tensions without making overt concessions.
The list continues to grow and includes recent exemptions on U.S. ethane, certain semiconductor products, and pharmaceuticals—offering behind-the-scenes relief while maintaining a firm public stance.
Meanwhile, a new order from President Trump clarifies that companies already paying tariffs on imported vehicles will not face additional levies, such as those on steel. The U.S. has also eased duties on foreign automotive parts.
The policy shift follows intense lobbying by the auto industry, which warned that continued tariffs would lead to soaring consumer prices and declining sales.
Administration officials have also highlighted progress in trade relations with other countries. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Tuesday that the U.S. and an unnamed country were on the verge of a trade agreement. Advisor Dawn Bessent added that the U.S. was “very close” to a deal with India.
