Chinese AI Model Sparks Debate Over U.S. Competitiveness

The release of Moonshot AI's Kimi K3 flagship artificial intelligence model has intensified debate in Washington over U.S. competitiveness in AI, Andrew Nusca reported for Fortune Tech.

According to the report, demand for the model was so strong that Moonshot AI, which is reportedly preparing for an initial public offering (IPO), temporarily suspended new subscriptions because of server capacity constraints.

Kimi K3 launched last week and is described as the largest open-weights AI model to date, featuring 2.8 trillion parameters.

The model is multimodal, optimized for coding and AI agents, and is reportedly less expensive than many competing U.S. models for long-context tasks.

The launch prompted criticism from some current and former advisers to President Donald Trump, who argued that American AI companies are losing ground to Chinese competitors.

Former AI adviser David Sacks criticized what he described as excessive guardrails on U.S. AI systems, posting on social media:

"Woke lobotomized models are the enemy of American competitiveness."

He also criticized Anthropic, arguing that its approach makes the United States less competitive.
