Consumers Sue Apple After DOJ Files Antitrust Lawsuit

Apple is facing a barrage of new consumer lawsuits accusing the iPhone maker of monopolizing the smartphone market, following a sweeping antitrust case filed by the US Justice Department and 15 states last week, according to Mike Scarcella's report for Reuters.

At least three proposed class actions have been filed since Friday in California and New Jersey federal courts by iPhone owners alleging that Apple inflated the cost of its products through anticompetitive conduct.

These lawsuits, seeking to represent millions of consumers, echo the Justice Department's allegations that Apple violated US antitrust law by stifling technology for messaging apps, digital wallets, and other features that could have fostered competition in the smartphone market.

Attorney Steve Berman, whose law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro filed one of the new cases, noted that his firm had previously sued Apple for allegedly impeding competition for its Apple Pay mobile wallet.


"We are pleased that the DOJ agrees with our approach," Berman said.
