Ongoing turmoil at CBS News linked to Bari Weiss’s management is beginning to cast a shadow over one of the media industry’s largest proposed deals in recent years, according to a recent report.

Paramount is seeking to complete a merger with Warner Bros. Discovery, a move that would place CBS, CNN, HBO, and a broad portfolio of entertainment assets under the control of billionaire David Ellison.

The deal is already facing antitrust scrutiny.

Compounding the pressure, veteran journalist Scott Pelley publicly described CBS News as “on fire,” while 60 Minutes veterans Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, and Jon Wertheim released a joint statement expressing concerns about management.

An executive involved in the merger told CNN’s Brian Stelter that the CBS News turmoil does not legally affect regulatory review because regulators are focused on antitrust concerns rather than journalism ethics.

However, the source acknowledged that “PR-wise, it might matter.”

Media coverage of the controversy has intensified, with the Financial Times publishing an article titled “Inside the CBS mutiny against Bari Weiss and David Ellison,” while the Los Angeles Times reported that Ellison faces an image problem in Hollywood.

Groups opposing the merger, including the Freedom of the Press Foundation, have also cited the CBS News controversy in campaigns against the deal.
