Throat lozenges and other similar items made in Japan have been in short supply nationwide as information spreading in China that the products are effective against COVID-19 symptoms has led to people snapping them up, according to a pharmaceutical firm, Yuhi Sugiyama reported for Mainichi Japan.

According to Tokyo-based Ryukakusan Co., since China's "zero-COVID" policy was eased in December 2022, the products have been in hot demand at stores in Japan. At this point, there is no indication when the situation will be resolved.

The company stated, "We deeply apologize to our customers and business partners for any inconvenience this has caused."

A Ryukakusan spokesperson explained, "The shortage is unthinkable in terms of domestic demand. Pharmaceutical items such as 'Ryukakusan' are effective for coughing and sore throats, but throat drops are considered as food products."
