DILG Eyes More Sweeping Drive vs. PH Illegal Drug Trade

The Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) is set to expand its efforts against the illegal drug trade in the Philippines with the planned nationwide implementation of its "Revitalized Police Program."

The PNP's intensified anti-illegal drugs campaign has resulted in almost PHP32 billion worth of seized drugs recorded from July 1, 2022, to April 21, 2024.

This initiative follows the successful pilot testing conducted in a community in Muntinlupa, where illegal drug cases and other crimes were prevalent.

During a press conference in Quezon City, DILG Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. discussed the need for a more comprehensive approach to address criminality, including the use and distribution of illegal drugs.

He highlighted the positive impact of the pilot program in Muntinlupa, where police officers immersed themselves in the community, building relationships and addressing local concerns.

Abalos emphasized that community engagement was crucial in reducing crime rates, particularly in combating drug-related offenses.

He cited the dramatic decrease in criminal activity observed in the pilot area, attributing it to the concerted efforts of law enforcement and community members.

The DILG, along with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA), and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), is also intensifying supply and demand reduction efforts through the "Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan (BIDA) program."

This initiative aims to eradicate the root causes of the illegal drug problem with the support of various stakeholders, including the community, family, and religious organizations.

Abalos emphasized the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle and engaging the youth in preventive measures.

He underscored the collaborative approach involving barangay officials, youth leaders, public officials, and law enforcement agencies in addressing drug-related issues.

The PNP's intensified anti-illegal drugs campaign, under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., has yielded significant results, with almost PHP32 billion worth of seized drugs recorded from July 1, 2022, to April 21, 2024.

This concerted effort reflects the government's commitment to combating the illegal drug trade and ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across the Philippines.
