Under the agreement, the DOE will leverage existing NIA irrigation facilities, ongoing constructions, and areas earmarked for future irrigation development projects "for public consumption" without compromising NIA's operations.
This collaboration is seen as a significant step toward water security and sustainable resource management, aligning with the goals outlined in Executive Order No. 22, series of 2023.
The partnership formalizes efforts to develop RE resources nationwide in line with the Philippines' targets to derive 35% of power from RE sources by 2030 and 50% by 2040.
The initiative is expected to generate additional funds for NIA's operations and maintenance while providing better access to clean and fairly priced energy for the public.
