The US Department of Justice has moved to reclassify state-licensed medical marijuana as a less dangerous drug, marking a significant policy shift.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche signed the order, which shifts cannabis from Schedule I to Schedule III under federal law. Schedule I drugs are considered to have no accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse.

The change does not legalize marijuana at the federal level but alters how it is regulated, easing restrictions on research and providing tax relief for licensed operators.

The move follows direction from Donald Trump to accelerate reclassification efforts. A broader review process is underway, with hearings expected to begin in June.

Officials said the decision is intended to expand access to medical treatment options while maintaining regulatory oversight.
