The European Union has imposed a €200 million ($232 million; £173 million) fine on Chinese-owned online retailer Temu for allowing illegal products — including unsafe baby toys and faulty chargers — to be sold on its platform, Robert Greenall reported for BBC News.

The European Commission said the company failed to “diligently identify, analyze, and assess systemic risks” posed by products on its platform and the harm they could cause to consumers.
Temu has been under investigation since October 2024 over compliance with its obligations as a designated Very Large Online Platform under EU law.
Temu rejected the decision, calling the fine disproportionate and saying it is considering its options.
An independent “mystery shopping” investigation found that many chargers failed basic electrical safety tests, while baby toys contained unsafe chemicals or small parts posing choking hazards, according to Euronews.
