EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized a commitment to “dialogue and stability,” but said the bloc would take “all necessary steps to safeguard EU interests.”
French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni echoed calls to avoid a trade war.
Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson warned that U.S. consumers would be the hardest hit, and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen criticized Trump’s stance as “pointless and very short-sighted.”
Meanwhile, Mexican officials, notified during talks with the U.S. State Department, called the move “unfair treatment.”
Trump has warned of further tariffs if the EU or Mexico imposes retaliatory measures, risking a breakdown in decades of global trade norms under the World Trade Organization’s “most favored nation” rules.
