EU MULLS NIXING EXTRADITION PACT WITH CHINA OVER HK POLL ‘REFORMS’

The European Union (EU) is considering formal scrapping of the extradition treaties with China over Hong Kong electoral reforms that will marginalize the opposition and stifle dissent.

Sources say the proposal to suspend extradition treaties with Beijing will face resistance from some member states like Hungary, but others are not reluctant to punish China for violating its commitment to honoring civil and political liberties under the 1987 treaty that handed over Hong Kong to China.

Under that pact, China was supposed to honor the status quo in Hong Kong but it now says the deal was a mere scrap of paper, like the July 2016 decision of the International Court of Arbitration (ICA) that junked China’s historic claims the underwater features, reefs, islets, and shoals in the South China Sea (SCS) and chastised Beijing for invading the Scarborough Shoal in the Philippines.

Foreign ministers will meet on Monday to announce light touch measures but tougher proposals are still under discussion, Finbarr Bermingham reported for the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

Under pressure from the United States and reeling from a blitz of Chinese sanctions, the EU is preparing new measures to punish Beijing for sweeping electoral reform that will marginalize opposition voices in Hong Kong.

According to four sources familiar with discussions, the measures could include a suspension of member state extradition treaties with China, although they are yet to be finalized by the officials who are busy laying the groundwork for Monday’s meeting of all 27 EU foreign ministers.
