The European Union risks entering a new phase of trade conflict with China unless both sides reach an agreement to reduce trade imbalances by October, European People's Party Chairman Manfred Weber said in an interview with Maryd Gwyn of Europe Today.

EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič said Brussels would seek an agreement with Beijing to address the bloc's widening trade deficit amid growing concerns over the impact of Chinese industrial overcapacity on European manufacturers.
Weber called for a tougher approach toward China, saying the EU supports free trade but only under fair and level competitive conditions.
