EJC has urged the Board of Deputies (BOD) of British Jews to reverse its decision to suspend ties with the European body, after the BOD demanded an investigation into allegations of misconduct against EJC treasurer Rabbi Yaakov Bleich, according to a report by Sam Sokol in the Israeli newspaper Haaretz.
According to a source close to the organization, BOD has suspended its membership with the EJC due to sexual abuse claims against one of its senior members and its failure to take action.
“The Board of Deputies of British Jews has suspended all activities with the EJC due to concerns about how the Congress is handling misconduct complaints,” the BOD wrote on Facebook, Zvika Klein reported earlier for Jerusalem Post.
The BOD, one of the EJC's wealthiest member groups, is dissatisfied with the retention of EJC treasurer Rabbi Yaacov Bleich, who was charged with sexually abusing women and children.
A source acquainted with the Congress stated, “There is a failure of EJC to take action, such as instigating an investigation or to seek to put safeguards around this leader’s activities in relation to ongoing humanitarian work, such as exposure to vulnerable young women, etc.”
