Sanford “Sandy” Weill, the former CEO and chairman of banking giant Citigroup, and his wife Joan, longtime donors to medical research on both coasts of the U.S., are stepping up their efforts, Forbes Daily reported.

Last week, two Bay Area universities—the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Stanford University—announced a $100 million gift over 10 years from the Weill Family Foundation to support a new cancer research initiative.
The project, called the Weill Cancer Hub West, is designed to advance cancer research and treatment through four specific programs.
The donation is a matching grant, with the goal of raising an additional $100 million. A quarter of the matching funds have already been secured, the universities said.
Weill, who retired as Citigroup CEO in 2003 and as chairman in 2006, dropped off Forbes’ billionaires list in 2022 as a result of his philanthropic giving. Now 92, he devotes most of his time to philanthropy through the Weill Family Foundation, which holds assets of $425 million.
