European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde said she is considering taking part in the upcoming French presidential election debate, a move that could lead to her stepping down from her post earlier than planned, Eleonora Vasques reported for Euronews.

Lagarde declined to specify what role she might play during an interview with the French newspaper Les Échos.

She said she is not currently planning to run as a candidate and would instead prefer to contribute to and help shape the national debate.

"I believe that a European voice needs to be heard in the French presidential debate," Lagarde said, adding that leaving the ECB before the end of her term remained a possibility.

France is scheduled to hold its next presidential election in April 2027.

The vote comes amid a fragmented political landscape, with a hung National Assembly and no stable governing majority, making it difficult for successive governments to pass key legislation.
