The oil supermajor plans to start up what Ammann said would be the world's largest low-carbon hydrogen production facility as early as 2027 near Houston, Texas.
It awarded the early design contract for the plant last month, and plans to make a final investment decision next year.
Last month, Arata Shigeno also reported for Nikkei Asia that IHI was working with General Electric to develop power plant gas turbines that burn ammonia, applying the Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer's ammonia expertise to hardware from the US turbine giant to make the carbon-free fuel more affordable to use.
The roughly 400-megawatt turbine will burn ammonia exclusively.
Yuta Takagi also reported for Nikkei Asia in Sept. 2022 that Japanese trading house
Mitsubishi Corp. was considering launching one of the world's largest ammonia production facilities in Texas. Mitsubishi, Japan's largest trading conglomerate, will sign a memorandum of understanding that month with the Corpus Christi port authority concerning the use of space.
