First Gen Renews Deal To Supply 100% Renewable Energy To Murata's PH Unit

Lopez-led First Gen Corp., a prominent provider of renewable energy (RE) in the Philippines, has extended an agreement to supply 100% renewable energy to Japanese electronics firm Murata's manufacturing plant in Batangas.

First Gen's subsidiary, Energy Development Corp. (EDC), operating the Bacon-Manito geothermal facility in Bicol, will provide clean energy to Murata's unit, the Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata, Inc. (PMM).

The company highlighted that supplying clean energy from the Bacon-Manito geothermal plant to PMM's factory aligns with Murata's commitment to shift to 100 percent renewable energy in all its global offices and facilities by 2050.

PMM's manufacturing within the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) economic zone in Batangas, operated by the Lopezes, has been running on full renewable energy since 2022.

Francis Giles Puno, President and COO of First Gen, stated, "Together, we in First Gen and PMM are not just reducing emissions but also shaping a future where environmental responsibility and growth go hand in hand."

The initial power supply agreement between First Gen and PMM was established in 2021. Puno added, "This extended collaboration not only strengthens our bond but also reinforces our shared dedication to environmental stewardship."

Masayoshi Koda, President of PMM, emphasized, "The renewal of our supply agreement with First Gen highlights our companies' decarbonization and sustainability goals. While we aim to capture the demand for components that support emerging technologies, we want to do so in a manner that is cost-efficient, best in class, and carbon-neutral."

In addition to utilizing geothermal energy, PMM has installed over 6,700 solar panels in its facility to generate nearly 3,000 kilowatts of electricity from solar power.

Tereso Panga, Director-General of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), disclosed that more ecozone locators are advocating for green and sustainable initiatives in industrial parks.

Panga highlighted that an "eco-industrial park," or EIP, is the new standard for PEZA zones, with ecozone developers like FPIP leading the way in implementing EIPs.
