Five major technology companies raised approximately $159 billion through bond issuance in the first five months of 2026, exceeding their combined bond issuance of roughly $150 billion over the entire 2020–2024 period, according to reporting by Yahoo Finance citing financial-market data.

The companies—Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Meta Platforms and Oracle—are investing heavily in AI chips, data centers and other computing infrastructure.

Their borrowing reflects the growing cost of expanding AI capacity and the need to supplement cash flow with outside financing.

A separate Reuters analysis of London Stock Exchange Group data found that Amazon, Alphabet, Meta and Oracle issued approximately $194 billion in bonds during 2026 through early July, up 79% from about $108 billion in all of 2025.

Goldman Sachs has forecast that bond issuance by those four companies and Microsoft could reach approximately $250 billion for the full year.

Morgan Stanley has separately projected that global AI-related debt issuance could approach $570 billion in 2026, more than double the previous year's level. The estimate covers a broader category of AI-related borrowing than the five companies alone.

The financing surge has raised questions about whether AI investments will generate enough returns to justify the cost of building and operating new infrastructure.

UBS estimates cited in financial-market reporting suggest that hyperscalers' capital expenditures could consume nearly all their operating cash flow in 2026, compared with a 10-year average of about 40%.

Despite these concerns, enthusiasm over AI earnings and growth prospects has supported major technology stocks.

However, a market rally led by a relatively small group of companies can leave major indexes vulnerable if investor expectations change.
