Ford is recalling approximately 85,000 Explorer Police Interceptor Utility vehicles because of the risk of engine failure that could potentially result in a fire, Michelle Chapman reported for the Associated Press (AP).

As of July 9, there have been 13 reports of under-hood fires in North America caused by engine block breaches in Explorer PIU vehicles with 3.3L engines made before June 2, 2022. I Photo: Ford
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) stated that the recall applies to vehicles from model years 2020 to 2022 with 3.3L hybrid or gas engines.
The NHTSA noted that engine failure could lead to significant quantities of engine oil or fuel vapor being released into the under-hood area, where it might migrate to and accumulate near ignition sources, resulting in a potential under-hood fire, localized melting of components, or smoke.

No reports of fire resulting from engine block breaches in non-police vehicles have been recorded.
Ford has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition. The automaker will notify vehicle owners about the investigation and will provide further information as it becomes available.
