Since returning to office for a second term last January, President Donald Trump has strained ties with several US allies through controversial policies, including tariffs of up to 50% on steel and aluminum imports, Isabel van Brugen reported for The Daily Beast.

Trump has also drawn criticism from allies with repeated statements suggesting the US should acquire Greenland, the semiautonomous Danish territory that hosts a US Space Force base.
Growing international unease over Trump’s leadership has also been reflected in recent polling.
A Gallup survey conducted in 2025 across more than 130 countries and released last month found that approval of US leadership declined by 10 percentage points or more in 44 countries between 2024 and 2025.
The steepest declines were concentrated among US allies, including NATO members.
Germany recorded the largest drop, with approval falling by 39 points, followed by Portugal at 38 points. Other allies, including the UK, Italy, and Canada, also registered significant declines.
