Trump wrote on Truth Social that he was launching the “most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country,” Grace Eliza Goodwin and Peter Hoskins reported for BBC News.

The announcement came after a 60-day ceasefire with Iran expired on Monday, with no clear diplomatic or military off-ramp from the conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran.

Trump’s latest move appears to expand the U.S. campaign of economic pressure, which has targeted foreign banks and companies doing business with Tehran.

In a recent social media post, Trump said he was launching an “economic D-Day” against Iran because Tehran had failed to reach a deal with Washington.

“Any country that allows its financial institutions, businesses, airports, or government entities to provide any type of lifeline to Iran will itself face tremendous economic consequences,” Trump wrote.
