US President Joe Biden led in slamming the violent attacks staged by supporters of defeated Brazilian candidate Jair Bolsonaro.
"I condemn the assault on democracy and on the peaceful transfer of power in Brazil. Brazil's democratic institutions have our full support and the will of the Brazilian people must not be undermined. I look forward to continuing to work with @LulaOficial," he said.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Adviser John Sullivan likewise criticized the attacks.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador tagged the attacks as a coup attempt, as did the Organization of American States (OAS), Cuba, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and Colombia.
French President Emmanuel Macron also castigated the Bolsonaro supporters, along with the British government, the European Union (EU), Portugal, Spain, India, Italy and other United Nations (UN) members.
