Hollywood Films Chase Box-Office Records as Summer Ticket Sales Surge

“I don’t think any box-office record is out of reach,” including the possibility of Spider-Man becoming the first film to surpass $1 billion in domestic box-office revenue, said Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends at Comscore, formerly Rentrak, according to Fortune Tech.

Premium-format screenings, audience fear of missing out (FOMO) and social-media buzz are helping fuel the momentum, Dergarabedian said.

The Odyssey, which opened July 17 with $123.5 million, grossed another $31.5 million over the weekend, bringing its estimated domestic box office to $461.2 million and worldwide total to $1.1 billion, including $289.3 million from IMAX screenings.

Hollywood's estimated domestic box office for the year stood at $6.61 billion through Sunday, 18.5% above the comparable period in 2025.

This summer's box-office season, running from May 1 through Labor Day, also has an extra week, making it a 130-day season compared with the typical 123 days, Dergarabedian noted.
