Hunter Biden has been indicted on nine tax charges in California as a special counsel investigation into the business dealings of the president's son intensifies, reported Lindsay Whitehurst for the Associated Press (AP).

The new charges, three felonies, and six misdemeanors, come in addition to federal firearms charges in Delaware related to a law against drug users having guns in 2018.
Hunter Biden had been expected to plead guilty to misdemeanor tax charges as part of a plea deal involving $4 million in personal income from 2017 and 2018. Defense attorneys plan to contest the new charges.
Congressional Republicans have pursued an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, alleging an influence-peddling scheme with his son, though no evidence has emerged implicating the president in any wrongdoing.
The House is expected to vote on authorizing the inquiry next week.
