Iceland Summons US Ambassador Over Trump Map Showing Country Under U.S. Flag

Iceland has summoned the US ambassador after President Donald Trump shared a map on social media depicting Iceland and several other countries under the American flag.

Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir summoned US Ambassador Billy Long after Donald Trump posted a controversial map online.

Icelandic Foreign Minister Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir called US Ambassador Billy Long to a meeting following Trump's post on Truth Social, according to Icelandic public broadcaster RÚV and Reuters.

Long had formally taken up the post only the previous month.

The image showed the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean covered by the US flag, with the entire landmass labelled “United States of America.”

Trump posted the image without an explanation or caption.

Icelandic officials strongly criticized the post. Gunnarsdóttir described it as inappropriate, while Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir called the underlying message an insult to Icelanders.

The incident comes amid tensions over Trump's repeated comments about acquiring Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

Trump has also previously suggested making Canada the 51st US state.

The latest post has added to concerns among European governments about US territorial ambitions in the North Atlantic and Arctic. The European Commission recently announced a €200 million investment in Greenland during a visit by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

US authorities had not publicly provided an explanation for the map at the time of the reports.
