A spokesperson for India's foreign ministry announced that formal orders for this decision would be issued shortly. Given the close partnership between the two nations, the statement explained, "India has decided to permit the export of rice to fulfill Singapore's food security requirements."
Guinea's Trade Minister Louopou Lamah visited New Delhi to persuade Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to exempt his country from these export restrictions. Key buyers of Indian rice include Benin, China, Senegal, Cote D’Ivoire, and Togo.
This announcement aligns with India's previous commitment to allow certain rice shipments upon request from consuming nations to meet their food security needs.
However, India's primary focus remains on stabilizing domestic food prices ahead of major festivals in November, key state elections by the end of this year, and a general election in early 2024, during which Modi will seek a third term.
