Indonesia Revives $10.5 Billion Sea Wall Plan To Save Jakarta From Sinking

Indonesia is reviving plans to construct a giant sea wall in the latest measure to prevent its capital city of Jakarta from sinking at a faster rate, as reported by Faris Mokhtar and Chandra Asmara for Bloomberg News.

Experts predict that one-third of Indonesia's capital may be submerged by 2050.

Home to more than 10 million people, Jakarta has seen some areas descend by as much as 4 meters between 1997 to 2005, with experts predicting that one-third of the capital may be submerged by 2050.

Flooding in Jakarta was estimated to cause losses of 2.1 trillion rupiah per year, which could rise to 10 trillion rupiah yearly in the next decade.

To slow down the sinking, Indonesia has restricted the extraction of groundwater and pushed for the creation of a $34 billion capital city in Borneo’s jungle called Nusantara.
