Iran Says Deal with Oman on Strait of Hormuz Traffic Is Near

Iran and Oman are nearing a new arrangement for managing commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran saying the proposed framework would establish a new security model for the strategic waterway, Iran's state news agency IRNA reported, Duarte Dias reported for CBS News.

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime route linking the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.

According to IRNA, the proposed mechanism would regulate the movement of commercial vessels, with ships entering through Iranian waters and exiting through Omani waters.

IRNA said the talks aim to establish "a new model that is different from the 60-year-old practice of the past," rather than simply restoring unrestricted passage through the strait.
