Iran Sets Conditions for Reopening Strait of Hormuz

Iran has said the Strait of Hormuz will not fully reopen unless the United States changes its policy toward Tehran, including by ending what Iran describes as a blockade, withdrawing US military assets from the region, lifting sanctions, unfreezing Iranian assets and compensating Iran for war-related damages, Fred Andrews reported for CBS News.

The Supreme National Security Council of Iran said the United States must also commit never to threaten Iran again.

The demands come as diplomatic efforts continue to secure an agreement that could restore normal shipping through the strategic waterway.

On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said talks with Oman were “approaching the final stages” but cautioned that this did not necessarily mean the Strait of Hormuz would reopen.

Both Iran and Oman have territorial waters in and around the strait.

Meanwhile, a Yemeni government official said Sunday that the Iran-backed Houthi group had attacked the Mocha port on the Red Sea.

Fayed al-Noman, assistant undersecretary of Yemen's information ministry, said the Houthis fired missiles and drones at the port, one of the main facilities controlled by Yemen's internationally recognized government.
