The Knesset Finance Committee convened at 1 a.m. early Thursday, Mar. 3, 2022, for an unscheduled, expedited session to provide El Al Airlines a government guarantee so that it can continue flying between Israel and Russia, an act that flustered the US, UK, and the European Union (EU), all of which barred Russian planes from entering their air spaces.

Prior to the committee meeting, Finance Minister Avigdor Lieberman issued a letter stating that on Wednesday international insurance firms had informed El Al that due to the sanctions imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, they would no longer be able to ensure Israel’s flagship carrier for flights between Israel and Russia.
Reporting for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz, Avi Bar-Eli wrote that the decision of insurers hit Israel and El Al hard, pushing the cost of business up for the Tel-Aviv Moscow route.
To mollify Russian President Vladimir Putin, Israeli lawmakers approved a $2-billion government guarantee for the airline.
It appears that only China and Israel are not abiding by the sanctions inflicted by the international community on Russia to punish it for invading Ukraine.
