Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba emphasized that Japan will continue to demand that the United States abolish increased auto tariffs, Jiji Press reported.

Appearing on a television program, Ishiba noted that a recent agreement between Washington and London establishing a 10% low-tariff quota for British vehicle exports to the U.S. was “one model,” but he stressed that Japan seeks complete elimination of the tariffs.
He argued that Japan’s trade and investment conditions differ significantly from those of the UK.
“That is one way (of reaching a deal), but the UK’s annual U.S.-bound auto exports are only about 100,000 units,” Ishiba said.
“We will persistently ask for abolition (of tariffs). Japanese companies are investing in the U.S. and creating jobs. If Japan’s auto industry is battered, they won’t be able to continue investing,” Japan Times also reported.
